Animals and Wolves

Raise farm animals and pets, and use a dog to calm wolves for feeding. Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea animals include cows, chickens, lambs, cats, dogs, and wild horses you can bring home. For an early free mount, head south of the village to the horses on the far side of the lake.

How do you interact with a wolf in Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea?

Bring a pet dog to calm a wolf, then feed the wolf. Your dog can follow you while you explore and help protect you from wild animals, so take one along when you want help approaching a wolf.

Wild animals can become companions as you build the required hearts and music notes. Think of calming and feeding as part of that relationship: a calm wolf gives you an opening to interact, rather than a reason to rush straight up to an aggressive animal.

Which animals can you keep on your farm?

You can keep cows, chickens, lambs, cats, dogs, and horses; you also start with a cow and a little bird. Different animals fill different needs, so choose your next addition around what you want to do.

AnimalWhy keep it?
HorseRide instead of dashing everywhere to save travel time and stamina.
CatRecover stamina through petting and develop more skills through care.
DogBring protection against wild animals and help calming wolves.
LambGet wool that can become cloth for outfits and quests.

A lamb is a useful early addition if you want clothing materials or need cloth for requests. In the barn, look for the wool symbol above the lamb.

Animal Centers can house animals for you, so your collection does not have to fit entirely inside your barn or home. You can also take a pet along on your travels rather than leaving every companion at the farm.

Where can you tame a free horse?

Find the three horses across the lake directly south of the village, then pet and feed the same horse over two visits on consecutive days. This early horse routine lets you bring a mount back to your farm for free.

Crouch before approaching

Move slowly toward one horse so you do not scare it away. Pet it, then give it food on your first visit.

Stay crouched as you approach the horse, then pet and feed it.

Return to the same horse the next day

Go back to the same spot, crouch, and approach that horse again. Repeat the interaction to tame it and bring it home for free.

Use the map to find it again

Your map records animals you have already seen. Check the horse locations there if you lose track of the herd before your return visit.

Getting a mount early saves you from spending so much stamina on dashing. Work the first visit into your Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea tips routine so you can return the next day. The two-visit routine here is for this early horse encounter.

How do you feed animals without making lots of fodder?

Give food directly to your animals; a mushroom counts as feeding, so you can avoid turning 20 weeds into 1 animal feed. Feed your cow and horse every day, including the horse you have just brought home.

Foraging a mushroom is a practical alternative when you would otherwise spend time gathering and processing weeds. Keep daily feeding in your routine before heading out to explore.

Feed your animals before letting them graze, or separate them from your crops with fencing. Grazing animals can eat growing crops if you let them reach the field hungry.

How do cats restore stamina and gain stronger skills?

Pet a cat to restore stamina, and keep caring for it to develop additional skills. You cannot trigger the stamina recovery continuously, so return to your other tasks between uses.

Check animal skills at the shop before choosing a new companion. Animals have base skills, then learn more as you care for them. In the Animals menu, hearts, music notes, and a skill panel help you inspect your companions.

Giving an animal its favorite food boosts its skills. One player's raised cat liked eggs and, by midgame, could provide cold protection, heat protection, wakefulness for staying up late, and extra stamina when fed its favorite food. Build up your cat's skills through care before expecting that combination of benefits.

For everyday exploration, a cat is a strong early choice because stamina recovery helps you keep going. Choose a dog when protection and wolf interactions are your priority. You can make that choice around your next outing.

What should you do when a wild animal attacks?

Put food on the ground to distract a wild animal, then approach and pet it to make progress toward taming. Carry food before heading into areas with wild beasts, including nighttime outings.

  1. Place food on the ground near the animal.
  2. Approach while it is distracted and pet it.
  3. Keep building its hearts and music notes through further interactions.

If you want to keep moving, back away while you still have some distance or ride past on your mount. Retreat can work when you are not too close; a dog is another option for protection.

With a mount for travel, daily feeding handled, and a pet chosen for your next trip, you have a useful animal routine to build on. Continue with the Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea walkthrough for your next adventure, or return to town and get to know the Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea bachelors.
